Alice Elaine Durkop Lyle began a new life on September 28, 2018. Alice was born on April 25, 1932 to Thoralf and Lena (Mathison) Durkop in Denver, CO. The youngest of eight, while still at home, her mother died, and Alice took on the responsibility of caring for her father and brothers who were still in the house. Alice married Robert S. Lyle on February 5, 1956. Together, they began a life together that’s lasted 62 years.
Alice thrived as a wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Through patience, determination, and the occasional spank turner, she raised their seven children – Linda, Susan, Sharon, Bill, John, Steve and Tom. She instilled in her children the characteristics of faith, responsibility, hard work and honor.
Her greatest legacy will be known for years and experienced by thousands. All her children are successful, caring individuals who willingly give of themselves through their varied professions. Each of them lived the values and standards established within them by their mother and father. Her adult grandchildren have the same values as their grandmother. They, too, continue the family heritage that defined Alice’s life.
Her greatest joy was spending time with her husband, children, their spouses, her 17 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren (with two more on the way). When she wasn’t watching the chaos that comes with a houseful of people, she willingly took on all comers in Canasta games. A fierce competitor, she never liked to lose and always asked for a rematch on the rare occasions when she did.
Alice was preceded in death by her parents and siblings; Sylvia, Ruth (Mickey), Mary, Thoralf (Bud), George, John, Charles (Chuck).
She is survived by her husband Bob, daughters Linda (Tom), Susan (Charles), Sharon (Stephen); sons William, John, Stephen (BJ), and Tom (Christine), and all her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
While only in a small way, the world is a better place because of Alice, who she was and what she gave of herself to so many. We love her and miss her, but will always have her in our hearts, in the laughter of our children and the knowledge that we are better people for having known and been loved by her.
