Alice Ann Del Castillo Jackson

d. May 4, 2017

Alice Ann Del Castillo Jackson, 89, passed away peacefully on May 4, 2017, after an illness of many years. Alice was a loving and much loved daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and auntie. We three sisters were with her this week as she let go. Alice was born in Brooklyn, New York on February 15, 1928. She spent her childhood with her big family in Houston, TX and moved to Albuquerque, NM when she was a sophomore in high school. She attended Albuquerque High where she met our father Sherwood Young Jackson, Jr. (SY, Tony). Alice was the youngest child of Harold Del Castillo and Helen Farrar del Castillo and was raised by her Father and Stepmother, Elizabeth del Castillo. Harold and Helen divorced when Alice was a young child, but in adulthood she reunited with her mother who was an accomplished author.

Alice was preceded in death by her four sisters, Helen, Teresa, Sarah, and Laural and her brother Buddy. Alice lost her beloved son, Sherwood Young Jackson, III in 2008 and her husband, the love of her life, in 2014. Alice and Tony were married in Albuquerque, NM and are survived by their three daughters, Claudia Russo with her husband John of Albuquerque, Martha Burns with her husband Dennis of La Luz, NM and Alice Dillon with her husband Tim of Portland, OR. Alice and Tony have six treasured grandchildren, Anne Horter, Steve Russo, Hayley Purdy, Evayn Lundquist, Carley Osborne, and Kyle Dillon. She also leaves behind a legacy of nine great-grandchildren, Drew and Johnny Horter, Sami and Kalley Russo, Holden Young Purdy, Asher and London Osborne, and Penelope and Connelly Dillon.  Alice’s adored younger siblings, Penny del Castillo Christensen and her husband, Steve, and brother, David Del Castillo and wife, Jay, all reside in Albuquerque.

Alice was the consummate homemaker. She managed to make long summer days at home on Indiana Street magical for the four Jackson kids. Alice was a special friend to all her neighbors on Indiana and Barber Place and to so many others in the community. After raising her four children she enjoyed working at Dan’s Boots and Saddles and later at Beauchamp Jewelers before she and our father opened their own home design store. After retiring they found more time to travel. They loved seeing the world and visiting their children and grandchildren in different parts of the world. They traveled to Colombia to visit with Alice’s cousins and to Brooklyn to visit Alice’s childhood home. They saw many states and found their way to Switzerland, France, Germany, Turkey, Spain, Italy, England and New Zealand.

Alice lived at her home on Barber Place until 2013 where she tended her beautiful gardens and was often seen sitting on her porch swing or walking with her friend and caregiver, Darlene Gonzales, who joined our family in loving our parents. Alice passed away while in the loving care of Carmen and Curtis Hudson. Cremation will take place and services are pending. Please direct any gift or remembrances to the Make a Wish Foundation.

A Celebration of Life will be held in Albuquerque on Saturday, June 17, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. followed by a luncheon reception from noon until 2:00 p.m. The family requests cheerful clothing.  Please contact the family for location of service at A.Jacksonmemorial@gmail.com.
