Alfonso Martin Yanez

May 20, 1939 — November 8, 2024

Alfonso Martin Yanez, age 85, of Rio Rancho, NM passed away peacefully on Friday, November 8, 2024. He is home now.

Martin was born May 20, 1939, in El Paso, Texas to Martin P. Yanez and Concha Yanez-Ornelas and was the oldest of three children. "Sonny", as Martin was affectionately known by his family, had a wonderful upbringing, spending time between his home in El Paso and California with his grandmother, aunts, uncles and many cousins. While attending Austin High School, Martin was an accomplished athlete excelling in football and track and field. After attending UTEP for one year, Martin went on to join the Navy where he spent four years traveling the world while being stationed out of San Diego.

It was during his time in the Navy that Martin met and married Margo Szymkowski. They went on to put down roots in El Paso, TX where they raised their children, and Martin began his career in sales. Anyone who knew Martin knew one thing about him and that was his incredible charm. It was this charm that drove his success in sales and led him to meet and make so many amazing friends throughout his career.

After some life changes, Martin relocated to Albuquerque, NM in 1981 where he continued to work in sales and get re-married to Louise Trainor. Martin and Louise lived a beautiful 34 years together enjoying life and all its adventures. Martin loved playing golf and spending time with good friends and family.

Martin was preceded in death by his baby daughter, Cheramie, his parents; his brother, Leonard; stepson, Scott Trainor and his beloved wife, Louise. He is survived by his children, Jack Paul (Jan) Yanez, Michelle (Ron) Yanez-Newcomb, Jennifer (David) Wahler and stepdaughter, Julie Griswold; grandchildren, Emilee, Blaine, Anthony, Taryn, Brittany, Andrew and Taylor; great-grandchildren, Griffyn, Calvin, Kynadee, Brixton, Easton, Landon, Elliott and Elizabeth; sister, and brother-in-law, Patricia and Robert Smith-Yanez; sister-in-law, Gloria Yanez; and many nephews, nieces and cousins.

The Yanez Family would like to thank all of Martin's caregivers from High Desert Hospice, Hummingbird Assisted Living and Casa Mis Abuelos particularly Deani, Brianna, Christopher, Monique, Sue, Carla and especially Perla and Carlos from Hummingbird; you've been our greatest support through this journey. In lieu of services, the family has asked that donations be made to The Alzheimer's Association in Martin's name.

Martin was the life of the party and will be greatly missed. Be at peace now Dad; we love you!
