It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Alex Hughes, beloved son of Sylvia M. Giomi and Scott D. Hughes, who departed this life on September 14, 2024. Born with an unyielding spirit and boundless dreams, Alex yearned from his earliest days to make his mark on the world, inspiring everyone who crossed his path with his laughter and kindness.
Alex’s journey took root at Jefferson Discovery Montessori, Our Lady of Fatima Catholic School, St. Pius X High School, and the University of New Mexico, where he became a cherished brother of Pi Kappa Alpha, embodying the fraternity’s heart and soul. With his quick wit, charm, and unwavering loyalty, he left a lasting impression on all who called him “brother.”
Answering a greater calling after college, Alex joined the U.S. Army, deploying to Iraq where he served with honor being awarded the Bronze Star and forging bonds that would last a lifetime and lending his courage to the nation’s defense.
In time, Alex pursued new challenges, graduating from the University of Texas School of Law and clerking for the Honorable Judge Gregg Costa before embarking on a career in corporate law. Though his path led him to the world of law, he never lost his untamed spirit or humor. In his characteristic honesty, he would often advise others about the sacrifices his chosen path demanded, speaking his truth with the courage that defined him. Though Alex’s journey led him down numerous winding roads, his fierce loyalty, boundless zest for life, and unapologetic candor never left him. For those who knew him, Alex was more than a friend or family member—he was just the best.
Preceded in death by his devoted grandparents, Marcello and Ioli Giomi, Lance and Audrey Hughes, and his beloved canine companion, Floyd “Money” Maywoofer, Alex leaves behind a family he filled with pride, friends who shared in his laughter, fraternity brothers, fellow brothers-in-arms, countless cherished acquaintances, and his loyal dog, Charles Dogaulle “Charlie.” Though Alex earned countless awards and accolades throughout his life, his greatest pride and joy was, and will always remain, his beloved family and friends.
There are no words that could truly capture the depth of Alex’s spirit; those fortunate enough to have known him understand that a soul as bright and loving as his could never be contained in an obituary. Although Alex leaves behind a void that can never be filled, yet his legacy of laughter, loyalty, and warmth endures through all those who knew him, who share his jokes, share his stories, and continue to live life to its fullest. Until we meet again, may he save a seat for us in the great VIP room in the sky.
