Albertha Francis Gatewood

Albertha (Bertie), age 88, passed away July 14, 2014. Bertie and her twin sister, Betha were born on February 10, 1926, in Cuba, New Mexico to Earl and Elzada Young. When Bertie and Betha were nine months old, their mother passed away. Three years later their father remarried, and Velma became their dear mother. Bertie graduated from Albuquerque High School in 1943 and from the University of New Mexico with a teaching degree in 1948. She was a member of the Alpha Delta Pi Sorority. Bertie married Gerald Sterman Gatewood (Jerry) on December 18, 1948. They raised eight children. Bertie taught elementary school from 1964 to 1981. After retirement, she was a docent at the Albuquerque Museum and at the New Mexico Museum of Natural History. Bertie was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She served a mission in the San Antonio, Texas Mission from March 1995 to September 1996. She served in the LDS Albuquerque Temple from 2000 to 2011. Bertie is survived by her sisters, Sarah Elizabeth Mount (Betha) and Elvada Bessie Teare; her eight children, Jerre Ader (Les), Nancy Brown (Craig), Leslie Davis (Alan), Randy Gatewood (Kathy), Scott Gatewood (Marjorie), Debbie Chavez (Norman), Mike Gatewood, Donald Gatewood; and by her greatest joy, her 37 grandchildren and 65 great-grandchildren. A viewing will be held Friday, July 18, 2014, at FRENCH - Wyoming, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. A Funeral Service will be held Saturday, July 19, 2014, 11:00 a.m., at the LDS Montano Chapel, 1100 Montano Rd. NW. Afterward, the dedication of the grave will be held at Sunset Memorial Park, 924 Menaul Blvd. NE.
