Albert Irvan Martin

June 23, 1924 — February 13, 2016

On Saturday, February 13, 2016, Albert I. Martin, 91, passed away. Albert was born in Lufkin, TX on June 23, 1924. He grew up near Hatch NM, and worked on various farms while going to High School. He graduated from Hatch Union High School in 1943, and immediately joined the Armed Forces. He served in the Army Air Corp during WWII in the Pacific Theater, on the island of Ie Shima.



When the war ended, Albert moved to Albuquerque to start college at University of New Mexico. He married his high school sweetheart, Clara Cluzecilla Vick, in Clint, TX in December 1946. After some course work at UNM, Albert went to work at Sandia Base on Top Secret clearance, and later was employed by Sandia National Laboratories. He held a number of positions of increasing responsibility ranging from drafting to design of Plant Engineering projects to Section Supervisor. He retired from Sandia Labs after nearly thirty-eight years of service.



Albert was a dedicated family man, and very active in his church. Albert served as an Elder at University Church of Christ in Albuquerque for 50 years. He and Cluzecilla helped to start the Christian Student Center at UNM in 1946. He was a founding father for the Albuquerque Christian Children's Home, participating in that project from the very first stages in 1967. He served for many years on the Board of Directors of Ponderosa Christian Camp, a summer youth camp. He was a Board member on the Taylor Foundation, which regularly awards gifts to Christian institutions. His leadership was also present in the establishment of the Church of Christ in Ft. Defiance, AZ., and at Window Rock, AZ.



He was preceded in death by Cluzecilla, after 67 years of marriage. He is survived by a son, Michael Martin and his wife Bonnie; and by a daughter, Patrice Brannan and her husband Daniel. Albert's grandchildren are Daniel Martin, Tim Martin and his wife Elizabeth, Chris Brannan and his wife April, Michael Brannan, and Julianne Brannan. The great-grandchildren are Kelsey Martin, Isaac Martin, and Abigail Martin, Caden Brannan and Allison Brannan. Albert's sole surviving brother is James Martin.



The family will host a visitation on Thursday, February 18, 2016 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at FRENCH - University. Funeral services will be on Friday, February 19, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at University Church of Christ, 1701 Gold Ave. SE. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery, 924 Menaul Blvd. NE.



The family asks for donations in Albert's name to either of the ministries named below in lieu of flowers. Albuquerque Christian Children's Home, 5700 Winter Haven Blvd., NW, Albuquerque, NM 87120-2643; or to the UNM Christian Student Center, 130 Girard Blvd, NE, Albuquerque, NM 87106.
