Alan K. Miller

Alan was born on August 29, 1936, at the Presbyterian Hospital in Albuquerque. He passed away March 9, 2018 at home.  Alan remained a lifelong resident of New Mexico. During WWII the family remained in Albuquerque and shortly thereafter Alan’s father, Kenneth, moved the family to Carlsbad, NM. It was in Carlsbad where he graduated from high school and met his lifelong partner Frances Kennerly. They were married in December of 1954 and returned to Albuquerque where Alan attended the University of New Mexico and they both worked full time to get Alan through college. They celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in December of 2014.

Following graduation from UNM Alan began a 25 year career in banking beginning with the First National Bank in Albuquerque. It was during this time that the management of the bank charged him with the responsibility of forming a statewide partnership with other banks in the state to offer to their customers, for the first time, bank credit cards. It was during his stay First National that he created the first commercial bank investment Banking Department. While at First National he graduated with the class of the University of New Mexico School of Business and Administrative Sciences and the Executive Program in 1972. He left First National in 1977 after reaching the level of Senior Vice President, Investments. In 1977 he joined the Bank of New Mexico in the position of Senior Vice President Funds Management, Investments and Public Funds Management. While at Bank of New Mexico Alan was instrumental in the creation of the New Mexico Mortgage Finance Authority and the New Mexico Student Loan Foundation. In 1983 he left the Bank and founded an institutional investment management company that became known as Funds Management, Inc.

Over the following 11 years he, Frances and another life-time associate, Frank Foy, assumed the management of investment portfolios of a number of bank, savings and loan associations and public funds depositories. It was during this time that interest rates spiraled upward and it was a very difficult time for financial institutions. Through the leadership of Funds Management most of, if not all of his clients were able to weather the storm and many are, in fact, still thriving today.

In 1989 Alan was diagnosed with a carcinoma of a vocal cord and this followed by a lung cancer in 2012. Alan lived a very full and useful life and contributed substantially to the financial development of the State of New Mexico.

Alan is survived by his wife, and partner in all things, Frances; two sons, John Scott and wife, Lynne, Michael Keith and wife, Patricia; three grandchildren, Jessica, Tyler and Elizabeth. There are also three great-granddaughters. He is also survived by one brother, Mark Miller of Tucson, AZ; and one sister, Lynn Carson of Indianapolis, IN. He loved them all dearly.

Memorial Services will be held Wednesday, March 14, 2018, 10:00 a.m., at FRENCH – Wyoming.
