Alan S. King MD

September 20, 1939 — October 14, 2013

Husband, Father, 'Gramps', Brother, Friend and Physician (retired) passed away peacefully at the age of 74 on the morning of Monday, October 14th due to complications of Lewy Body Disease. Alan relished living and practicing medicine in New Mexico for 30+ years. Its diverse community and beautiful landscape fed his appreciation for the human spirit and insatiable sense of adventure. Alan was a lifelong learner who valued and encouraged education. He graduated from Juniata College in Huntingdon, PA and Harvard Medical School. His medical training took him to Buffalo, NY, and Salt Lake City, UT, and he served two years of military service at Nellis Air Force Base in Las Vegas, NV. He brought his family to Albuquerque in 1971 to complete his cardiology training. Alan's cardiology practice in New Mexico included time on the faculty at University of New Mexico Medical School, followed by Lovelace Medical Center, Cardiology Consultants, and New Mexico Heart Institute. He was Governor of the NM Chapter of the American College of Cardiology from 1996 - 1999 and served on the Board of the New Heart Center for Cardiac Rehabilitation in his retirement. Alan was an athlete and outdoor enthusiast, passions he shared with his family and friends. He was an avid tennis player and jogger. He skied New Mexico's mountains in the winter and fly-fished its streams in the summer. He took his family camping often and explored wilderness backroads with gusto. In the 1980's, he applied his fledgling handyman skills working on a cabin in the Jemez mountains, one of many instances in his life when enthusiasm trumped fear of failure. Alan was a proud family man, something everyone who came in contact with him quickly learned. He loved a good joke, and often embarrassed his family with eye-rolling puns. The twinkle in his eye remained through to the end. He will forever be in the hearts of his wife of 49 years, Ann; daughters, Alison, Kathy and Deborah; sons-in-law, Ed Wong and Jared Taylor; four young grandchildren; brother, Bruce; and sister, Ann Layman. A celebration of Alan's life will be held on Saturday, October 26, 2013, 1:00 p.m. at the First Unitarian Church, 3701 Carlisle Blvd. NE. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of your choice, or to the Samuel J. and Frances S. King Endowed Scholarship at Juniata College, c/o Development Office, 1700 Moore Street, Huntingdon, PA 16652, with checks made payable to "Juniata College." Please note the scholarship name in the memo line.
