Agnes Montoya was born August 21, 1926 in Sile, NM. She passed into the Lord's hands on Sunday, August 28, 2022. She was preceded in death by her parents, Andres and Librada Segura; siblings, Eliseo Segura, Ethelbina Martinez, and Seledonio Segura; and grandson, Freddie Pena. She is survived by her husband, Orlando Montoya; children, Agnes Chankin (Stephen), Orlando Montoya, Ronald Montoya (Petra), and Andrew Montoya (Christine); sister, Natalia Perez (Eddie); grandchildren, Genevieve, Brian, Heidi, Erika, Jessica, Jason, Ronald Jr., Carmen, Gavin, Hope, and Joseph; along with nine great-grandchildren.
Agnes was the eldest daughter of a rancher. She left home at the young age of fifteen to work at the local convent in Bernalillo, NM. She then came to Albuquerque and started working as a nanny. At that time Agnes chose to enter a career in retail, where she worked at several stores downtown.
In 1950, she married the love of her life Orlando. They were only married briefly when Orlando was drafted into the service and Agnes was left to wait. Even though he was deployed overseas, she always knew that he would come home. During this time, she stayed with her sister, Vina and brother-in-law, Abel and continued to work at a local general store. Upon his return, they made their home in Old Town Albuquerque and started a family.
As time progressed, they bought their business, Ace Upholstery in the early 60's. Here they worked side by side, with Agnes as the seamstress and Orlando as the upholster. Even though they worked hard and put in many hours at their shop, they always had time for their family. She loved having everyone around, whether it was a Sunday dinner, an outing to Furr's Cafeteria, or breakfast on Sunday mornings; family came first. All were welcome and everyone felt how much she loved them.
She was a dedicated daughter, a loving wife, loyal sister, a caring aunt, amazing mother, incredible grandma, and above all a wonderful person. Agnes Montoya was our family's matriarch and will forever be missed and loved.
