Steven Taron Walker was born on June 18, 1955 to Herbert Hoover Walker and Juanita Virginia Walker as the youngest of 3 children in Albuquerque, New Mexico at Bataan Memorial Hospital. He attended Albuquerque Public Schools, graduating from Highland High School in 1973 where he was a leading player on the Varsity Basketball Team. He received an athletic scholarship to South Plains Junior College in Texas and attended there before entering the United States Army during the Viet Nam War. He received an honorable discharge after several years of service to our country, stateside and abroad. He was married to Mary Ann Randall Walker and to this union were born two children: Steven Randall Walker and Mary Rachelle Walker
Steve was an outgoing energetic person who never really met a stranger. He loved playing basketball, watching sports, and visiting with friends and loved ones. Though his medical condition caused him to take an early retirement, Steve was a hard worker, employed at Greyhound and Albuquerque Public Schools, among other companies. In his later years, he filled his days keeping up with current events, watching sports, and studying the Word of God. Although he really was unable to attend, he made New Hope Full Gospel Baptist Church his home church and claimed Bishop Cooper as his Pastor. He loved sharing his philosophy on a world of topics in between corralling his canine children Tweets and Peyton.
Steve and Rachelle developed a strong bond in her teenage years, and she was instrumental in caring for her father during his lengthy illness. They supported each other and were each other’s greatest cheerleader. Rachelle has proven to be an extraordinary daughter, making sacrifices to meet her dad’s needs, and demonstrating maturity beyond her years; all while maintaining superb grades in high school and college. We, her family, applaud her and are proud of her accomplishments, knowing that with all her responsibilities at home, she continued to work and go to school to obtain her credentials in the medical field. Her knowledge and gained experience as a Nursing Tech were undoubtedly helpful in caring for her father and he was so proud of her as she has continued coursework to receive her Registered Nurse certifications!
Steve took flight on Friday morning, August 28, 2020 to his eternal home in Heaven. He now resides with all the other saints who have been called home; including his parents, Rev. Herbert H. and Juanita V. Walker; former wife, Mary Ann Randall Walker; sister-in-law, Alesia F. Walker; brother-in-law, Robert E. Mosley Jr.; and many loved ones, and friends who have preceded him. Because he made Jesus his Savior at an early age, we will see him again on the other side. We passionately believe absent from the body, present with the Lord! He leaves to mourn his departure: his daughter, Rachelle and son, Randy; his sister, Gwendolyn F. Mosley (E. Stanley Mosley); his brother, Herbert S. (Mike) Walker; his niece, Anitra L. Walker; nephews, Kevin G. Mosley (Courtney), Donavan S. Mosley, Herbert Marshall Walker (Gina), Kenneth M. Mosley, and Ryan Sanford Walker (Kristl); uncle and aunt, James A. and Dollene F. Posey; a host of cousins, great nieces and nephews, who loved him dearly. Special thanks to 1st Cousins David T. Morgan, Donald Ray Walker, Bessalyn S. Gantt, and Janice E. Washington.
