Ruth Cowie Dixson, age 86, of Albuquerque, NM passed away peacefully after a short battle with cancer, on the morning of Thursday, July 18, 2019 with her sons at her side. She was born June 4, 1933 in Topeka, KS to Daniel and Louise Cowie. Ruth was raised in Whitecloud, KS by her grandmother, Carrie Kelley, before moving back to Topeka and graduating from high school. She attended the University of Kansas for several years before getting married, starting a family, and moving to New Mexico where she worked for the Department of Treasury, raised her family and remained throughout the rest of her life.
As a young girl she enjoyed classical music, cowboy and indian movies, christmas time, and especially spring and sunflowers. Later she found a love for jazz music, dancing, hummingbirds and bird watching, quilting, politics, history, genealogy and traveling throughout the Southwest. She was an excellent cook and loved baking; especially bread, cherry pies and biscuits. Ruth was a devout Christian, realized the importance of having God at the center of her life and was an active member of Faith Lutheran Church for many years. Her children and grandchildren were her proudest accomplishments and she raised her children with patience, love and kindness, and stressed the importance of becoming independent and working hard.
Ruth faced many hardships in her life but will be remembered for her resilience, her strong and sweet spirit, her sense of humor and for never losing her faith in God. In the last few months of Ruth’s life she became very interested in the Catholic religion and at her request, she was baptized, anointed, blessed and confirmed into the Catholic faith by Chaplain Fr. Joel Bagus only moments before her death.
