Ronald Wayne Smith

July 27, 1955 — August 7, 2016

Ronald Wayne Smith, 61, of Rio Rancho, NM, formerly of Scioto County and Columbus, OH, died peacefully at his home on Sunday, August 7, 2016, after a lengthy illness. Ron was born July 27, 1955, in Portsmouth Ohio, to Owen Smith, Jr. and the late Cora Agnes "Aggie" Howard Smith. He married his high school sweetheart, Debra Layne "Debby" Smith, on April 26, 1975, in Lucasville, OH. From this union, three beautiful children were born. They are Erin Elayne (John) Wogaman, of Canon City, CO, Ryan Andrew Smith of Colorado Springs, CO, and Kayla Kristine (Dan) Powell of Indianapolis, IN. Ron was further blessed to be known as Papa to seven: Kyle Andrew Baker, Evan Tyler Wogaman, Calla Kathryn Wogaman, Lily Rayne Powell, Milo Patrick Powell, Cora Violet Powell, and Harrison Alexander Napoles Smith.
He is also survived by his step-mother, Barbara K. Hayzlip Baldridge Smith; his brother, Randal Alan Smith of Ashland, KY; two sisters, Andrea Gaye (Dana) Messer, and Pamela Jean (Kevin Taylor) Smith both of Portsmouth, OH; maternal aunts, Genoa MacFadden of Owosso, MI, and Janice Lee Conley of Inverness, FL; paternal aunts, Eloise (Carl) McClurg of West Portsmouth, OH, Louvena (Phil) Swords of Minford, OH; paternal uncles, E.E. "Dick" Smith of NC, Arnold Smith of Wheelersburg, OH, Jonas (Mary Ann) Smith of Sciotoville, OH, John (Jane) Smith of Argillite, KY, and David (Cindy) Smith of Minford, OH, and several nephews, nieces and beloved cousins.
He was also preceded in death by his brother, Brian Scott Smith, in infancy; his grandparents, and several aunts and uncles.
Ron was a 1973 graduate of Minford High School. He was formerly employed by National Bank of Portsmouth, Credit Thrift and Bank One, NA. He was a former manager with Bob Evan's Restaurants, and most recently and before his illness forced his retirement, sales manager for TruGreen, in Colorado Springs, CO and Albuquerque, NM. He was an avid reader and sports fan, having loved cheering on his Ohio State Buckeyes, Cincinnati Reds and Cincinnati Bengals, and most importantly, a follower of Jesus Christ.
Our hearts are broken as we have to say "see you later," and we will always remember his twinkling eyes, mischievous smile, and his love for his family. We celebrate the beginning of his eternal life with no more sickness, no more pain.
A Memorial Service is planned for Saturday, August 20, 2016, at 11:00 a.m., at Eastview United Methodist Church, 1045 Ross Road, Columbus, OH, 43227, with Reverend Joe Fox officiating. His remains will then be returned to Colorado for a private memorial service in Colorado Springs, and final interment in Fort Logan National Cemetery in Denver, CO at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in his honor to his wife, Debby.
1 Thessalonians 4:13 But we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, about those who are asleep, that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope.
