Peggy Kathryn Cunningham

October 12, 1953 — January 28, 2017

Peggy Kathryn Cunningham, 63, passed away in Albuquerque, New Mexico on January 28, 2017 after a brief illness. Peggy was born October 12, 1953 as one of six children born to Lorraine M. and Vincent A. Cunningham. She was raised in Arlington Heights, Illinois.
Peggy was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Kevin Cunningham. She is survived by her sisters, Donna Bouma (Jim) of Illinois, Nancy Lubecker (Bob) of Texas, and Linda Cunningham of Colorado; her brother, Dan Cunningham of Illinois, and 12 nieces and nephews.
Peggy became a member of the Bahá'í Faith nearly 20 years ago, thereafter actively participating in Bahá'í community life by teaching children's and youth classes and sharing information about the Bahá'í Faith with anyone who asked.
She made friends easily with her lively wit and never met a child who did not quickly warm to her. Peggy had a natural flair for fashion and glamour, while also being modest and detached from material concerns. She shopped at consignment stores and loved nothing better than a good bargain. A natural beauty, she had a megawatt smile that lit up a room and a sense of humor that kept any conversation lively and upbeat.
Peggy earned her bachelor's degree in 1980 from the University of Illinois in Chicago as well as a master's degree in adult education from National Louis University. She found her most fulfilling employment working with individuals who were recovering from traumatic brain injuries, teaching English as a second language, and, most recently, assisting young adults who were caught up in the court system prepare for their GED exams.
Peggy will be remembered for her passion for helping the underprivileged and for sharing her kindness and sense of humor with all she encountered. She genuinely loved her clients, her pupils and her colleagues, seeing herself as a humble servant of humanity engaged in the worship of God through service. She was loved very much in return. She met her final illness with strength and fortitude and unshaken faith in her loving Creator. Even her doctors and nurses commented on the grace and serenity with which she faced her diagnosis.
In addition to her family, she leaves her dear friends, Diana and Robert M. Kaufman, and Betty J. Fisher and Jack Bowers, of Albuquerque. Across the country, she amassed an army of loving friends who will miss her greatly.
