Michael J. Shannon

d. September 7, 2016

Michael was born in 1945 in Black Rivers Falls, Wisconsin. His father was a machinist and his mother was a homemaker. He has two sisters, Pat and Jean, and a brother, Tom. His formative years were spent in Chicago, Illinois and Hoffman Estates, Illinois.

He served in the U.S. Navy 1968-72, at: Pensacola, Florida; Wahiawa, Hawaii; and Adak, Alaska.

He worked in the private sector (Illinois) for three years after being discharged from the Navy. Seeking warmer pastures, he joined the U.S. Department of Energy in San Francisco in 1975, and served for several years on the Planning Commission of the City of Half Moon Bay, California. He was a licensed CPA (California; inactive status beginning 2002).

He and his wife, Yolanda, met in Dallas, Texas, in 1980 and were married in 1981 in Las Vegas, New Mexico. In 1982 they moved from Half Moon Bay, California, to Placitas, New Mexico. In 1989, they were blessed with the birth of their daughter, Christina. In 1996, they moved into Albuquerque because Christina was attending school at Our Lady of the Annunciation. Christina graduated from the University of Notre Dame in May 2013 with a Bachelor of Architecture degree. Christina is now employed at Clemens Bruns Schaub Architects in Florida.

A devoted husband and father, many an evening hour was spent keeping up with Christina's high school math (some of which he had not taken in high school), so as to be able to help if help was ever needed. Generally, it wasn't.

He was a parishioner of Our Lady of the Annunciation Catholic Church, serving at various times as a greeter, religious education instructor, RCIA sponsor, and member of the parish's St. Vincent de Paul Society. He was also a volunteer for Heritage Hospice, visiting patients and their families.

His favorite form of recreation was being out in his Lund boat on the chain of six lakes at Chetek, Wisconsin, part of northwest Wisconsin, fondly known as "God's country" to residents and visitors. He had a love-hate relationship with PCs. In later years, his daughter introduced him to Apple computers, which seemed not to require an in-depth knowledge of registries, as was the case with PCs.

In 1998, he had his first encounter with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and underwent chemotherapy at the New Mexico Cancer Center. A recurrence in 2003 took him to M.D. Anderson Cancer Center for five months of treatment in Houston. This treatment included high-dose chemotherapy and an autologous stem cell transplant. In July 2012, he was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia and Multiple Myeloma. He was grateful for the care provided by the physicians and staffs of the New Mexico Cancer Center, M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, and, at the end of life, Presbyterian Kaseman Hospice. While he abhorred the disease and the chemotherapy, he realized that they helped him grow spiritually.

He is survived by his wife, Yolanda, their daughter, Christina (Nicholas Boucher), his sisters Pat and Jean, brother, Thomas; mother-in-law, Teodorita Serna, sister-in-law, Sophie and brother-in-law, John as well as nieces, Karen, Jenifer, Cassandra, Sahra and Krystal and nephews Bradley, Michael and Gabriel.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, September 11, 2016 from 2:00-4:00 p.m. at FRENCH - Wyoming, with the Vigil for the Deceased to follow at 4:00 p.m., also at FRENCH - Wyoming. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday, September 12, 2016 at 8:30 a.m. at Our Lady of the Annunciation Catholic Church, 2621 Vermont NE. Interment will be at a later date in Wisconsin.

The family wishes to thank the clergy and staff of Our Lady of the Annunciation Catholic Church for their support, and relatives, friends, and neighbors for their support, meals, and assistance in many ways. The family also wishes to thank the physicians and staffs of the New Mexico Cancer Center, Presbyterian Hospital Specialty Medical Unit, and Kaseman Hospice.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to: New Mexico Cancer Center Foundation, 4901 Lang Ave. NE, Albuquerque 87109; Presbyterian Healthcare/Kaseman Hospice Foundation, P.O. Box 26666, Albuquerque 87125.
