Mrs. Mary D. Olix, age 93 and a former resident of Charleston, SC, passed away in Albuquerque, NM on September 30, 2016. Mary was born in Charleston on April 22, 1923, the youngest child of William R. Davey and Mary L. Teague. She attended Catholic schools and graduated from Bishop England High School in 1941. She married Robert James Olix in 1943. During World War II, she was a clerk in the Charleston Naval Intelligence Office. After the war, she worked for the Bell Telephone Company and later as a clerk-typist in the Charleston Naval Base Communications Department for 15 years. In 1967 she joined a local law firm and subsequently worked in the Naval Legal Services Office as a court reporter until she retired in 1984 after 35 years of government service. After retirement, she worked at O'Quinn's Day Care on James Island and for two summers was employed at Yellowstone National Park. Mary had a beautiful alto voice. She sang in the choir of the old St. Joseph's church and was the choir director at Nativity Catholic Church from 1961 until 1987. She was often invited to sing in choral and church-related musical events, as well as marriages and funerals. In the 1950's, she acted in a series of "Passion Plays" staged in South Carolina and Georgia during Lent She performed in comedy productions to benefit the Pilot Club of Charleston and other acting roles. Mary served as Secretary and President of the Charleston Deanery of Catholic Women. In 2003, Mary moved to Albuquerque, NM. She enjoyed taking visitors to Albuquerque's Old Town and to Santa Fe and acquired a love of Georgia O'Keefe's art. At her home, she enjoyed the annual International Balloon Fiesta from the comfort of her patio. She loved green chili cheeseburgers and took a hot-air balloon ride. She belonged to the Red Hat Society and attended St. Joseph's on the Rio Grande Church. Mary traveled whenever possible, including the Panama Canal Zone, the Caribbean and Alaska, and Rome as a member of a select choir. Mary loved dogs and did everything she could for their health and happiness. Mary was predeceased by her parents, her brothers George, Johnny, Harry and Willie Davey, her sisters Louise Davey and Gertrude Osborne, and niece Peggy Parke. She is survived by her son, Robert J. Olix, Ed.D., of Albuquerque, NM, grandson David Olix and wife Leila Belhadjali, granddaughter Sarah Olix and husband Juan Florencio-Rios, great grandchildren Anne-Chloe, Perry and Linnea Olix, and Robert Castaneda, all of Woodinville, WA, and a host of nieces, nephews and their many children and grandchildren, all of whom she loved and supported when and wherever possible. Cremation has taken place, and services will be held in Charleston, SC on November 11 and 12, 2016. Cards and messages of condolence may be sent to: Robert J.
