Mary Morneweck

d. January 8, 2017

Mary Morneweck, a long-time resident of Albuquerque and Manzano del Sol, passed away on January 8, 2017, with her family at her side. She was born in Youngstown, Ohio, the third of four children to parents from Eastern Europe. Mary was a loving sister, wife, aunt and friend. She worked for many years as the dedicated accountant at the former Bains construction company. Earlier in her life, she was a jewelry sales person, a career that her sister followed many years later.

Her greatest joy was her husband, Monty, a World War II meteorologist. She went with him to help with the reconstruction in Germany and Japan following the war, and she lovingly cared for him in their home in Albuquerque and at Manzano del Sol following his multiple sclerosis diagnosis. She was a dedicated Aunt, helping to raise her nephew Ron (wife Karen) and niece Sara (husband Mark), and provided love and care for her great-niece Lisa (husband Allen) and great-nephew Ronnie (wife Courtney), She leaves behind others she loved, including great-nephews Jasper and Robbie and great-great nephews Austen, Dylan, Riley and Cash. She was preceded in death by her parents Florence and George; brothers Eli and Steven; sister Anne; and husband Monty. She spent the last hours of her life with her niece and great-niece, gracing us with her loving presence and passing one month after her sister. She has given us a final gift of faith in this time, for which we are eternally grateful.

Mary's life was spent in service to many. She led a bible study at her home, volunteered at Manzano del Sol serving food to residents of the health care center, working in the gift shop, calling bingo, and helping with resident governance. She was the volunteer of the month in March 1990, an honor she treasured. Her faith in God was strong. She loved attending mass at the Air Force Base and reading the bible and spiritual writings. Her faith sustained her, and was evident in the way she loved her family, friends and those around her. Her love was her gift to us all.

In her final years, she was lovingly cared for by the staff at Manzano del Sol health care center and Ambercare hospice, who treated her as their own mother, aunt, and sister. She displayed a kind and feisty spirit and never lost her sense of humor. We miss her dearly, and find comfort in remembering her kindness, giving ways, faith in the Lord, and special meals she prepared for us, including her amazing PB&J sandwiches and beef soup.
