John E. Sweeney Sr.

On August 28, 1936, John E. Sweeney, Sr. was born in Las Vegas, NM. John married Viola Sweeney on September 3, 1960. They had a total of five children. He moved to Aztec, Santa Fe, and eventually settled in Albuquerque where he has lived since 1970. He was a State Farm Insurance Agent for 30 plus years and eventually retired in 2002. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle. He enjoyed family time, softball and cheering on Notre Dame and the Boston Red Sox. Being the true Irishman he was, he entered Heaven on St. Patrick’s Day, March 17, 2020 to be with his Lord.

John is preceded in death by his parents, George and Sophia Sweeney; his daughter, Loretta Sweeney; son, Ralph Sweeney; and his two sisters, Sophie Ann Schmidt and Dorothy Beams.

He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Viola Sweeney; his sons, John E. Sweeney, Jr. and wife, Brenda, and Theodore G. Sweeney; his daughter, Shelly Schancer and husband Kory; grandchildren, Crystal Martinez and husband, Casey, John Sweeney III and wife, Kristen, Brittany Sweeney, Brandon Sweeney, Cameron Sweeney, Taylor Schancer, Levi Schancer, and Chelsea Browning; and his 10 great-grandchildren. John is also survived by his brother, James Sweeney and his wife, Betty.

We will forever miss him!

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, July 11, 2020, 12:00 p.m. at Prince of Peace Catholic Community, 12500 Carmel Ave. NE.                    .

A Graveside Service will be held on Monday, July 13, 2020, 12:00 p.m. at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, 7999 Wyoming Blvd. NE.
