John A. Craig M.D. passed away on the afternoon of Friday, May 18, 2018 after a brief illness. He was 97 and 3/4 years old. He was active up until his final days. In his life he enjoyed tennis, golf, swimming, working in his extensive rose garden, and walking his dogs. He came to the southwest with his wife Doris and young daughter Sandra Jo in the 1950’s after completing his residency in radiology at the University of Virginia. He was a pioneer in providing medical services to underserved communities in his early work with Van Atta Labs. He completed his medical career working for the DoD’s Military Entrants Processing Command in Albuquerque.
He enjoyed bridge, competing in at least three bridge clubs during his life. He was an avid volunteer reading newspapers for the blind, doing pet therapy with his beloved dog Ginger, and reading with elementary school students during his later years. He is survived by his daughters, Sandra Craig McKenzie of Lawrence, KS, and Karen Sue Pierson of Bosque Farms, NM; and his son, John A. Craig, Jr. of Albuquerque, NM.
A visitation will be held Friday, May 25, 2018 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at FRENCH - University. In lieu of flowers contributions can be made to QASA Q www.casaq.org or The Trevor Project www.trevorproject.org.
