Jane was born at home in the small western North Carolina town of Granite Falls on December 25, 1942. Her parents were Arnis “A.E.” Melton and Joyce C. Russell. She was the middle child with an older sister, Joan (Melton) Abernethy and a younger brother, Edwin “Ed” Melton. She graduated from Granite Falls High School on 1961. She then attended Lenoir College in Hickory, NC. Jane worked in banking in North Carolina until her marriage to Joseph P. Reel Sr. she then followed his career in radio to Monterey, CA working for Bank of America, then to Phoenix, AZ arriving in Albuquerque in 1971 when joe took a job at KOB. Jane was with the Albuquerque Public Schools in a “pull-out” mobile classroom servicing parochial schools then was based at Zia Elementary school assisting teachers and operated a computer system using a “writing to read” method. She met her husband, Jim socially during her work with APS and they were married in 1987. Jane was a competitive bowler in league play and for several years was President of the Thunderbird Little League. She supported her children in their sports. She was able to retire from APS in June of 1999. She was an avid gardener and able to share her husband’ interests in early Ford Thunderbirds through the local Pajarito Car Club. They traveled privately, returned to Granite Falls almost annually and attended conventions with the car club also they were able to visit Jim’s relatives in Ireland several times. Jane lived a comfortable life, enjoyed it all and was a good and loyal friend to many.
Jane is survived by her husband of 33 years, James V. “Jim” Timmons; daughter, Mia Fisher; grandchildren, Cody and Addisyn Fisher of Albuquerque; son, Joseph P. Reel of Corpus Christi, TX; sister, Joan; nephew, Robert Abernethy; brother, Edwin and wife, Kim; nephew, Anthony Melton; step-daughter, Alanna Pugh and husband, Brian of Phoenix, AZ; grandchildren, Shaun Aguilar and wife, Valerie; great-grandchildren and Grayson Aguilar of Phoenix, AZ; and Joshua Aguilar; great-grandchildren, Kori Aguilar, Lylah Aguilar of Portland, OR; step-daughter, Marchell Woodruff and husband Jim; grandchildren, Brandon Gilmore and wife, Kayla; great-grandchild, Carson of Arvada, CO; grandson, Cameron Gilmore and wife, Jade; great-grandchildren, Jack and Lola Gilmore of Albuquerque; grandchild, Alexandra Gilmore of Austin, TX and step-son, James A. “Tony” Timmons of Phoenix, AZ. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to The Dislexic Group LLC, a PO Box at 3961 E. Chandler Blvd. Suit #111 PMB # 292 Phoenix, AZ 85048, which remediates children with difficulty understanding how to read and write.
