Helen A. (Black) Hughes

Helen A. Hughes, 85, of Albuquerque, NM passed away peacefully surrounded by family and friends Monday April 23, 2018.

She was born November 18, 1932 in Washington County, Maryland, to Roy O. and Hallie Mae Roberts Black.  After graduating with the class of 1950 from Hagerstown High School, Helen went to work as a Clerk for Potomac Edison Electric Co in Maryland.  She married Robert L. Hughes, a hometown gent, in 1956 and they moved to Boulder, Colorado where she earned her PHT (putting hubby through) in 1958. They then moved to Albuquerque, NM for Bob – as everyone knew him – to start working at Sandia Corporation. The family moved to Cedar Crest, NM in June of 1967.  Helen was a busy stay-at-home mom, a Cub Scout Den Mother for both her sons, and sang in the church choir.  She was known for her excellent cooking, especially her pickled eggs, beets and onions! She instilled a love of cooking and a generous spirit in all her children. Later, she drove a special Education school bus and was a secretary / bookkeeper for Mountain Realty.

Helen is survived by son, Brian Robert (Randine) Hughes and grandchildren, Zoey Krista (Kevin) and great grandson, Dexter Robert  VanDuren, Leo Brian, and Jamie Lynn Hughes, great grandson, Vincent Gerard Lucero, son, Kevin Stuart Hughes, daughter, Kathleen Diane (Jason) Vargas, grandchildren, Stephanie Ann and David Alan (Domonique) Vargas and sisters, Mary Stains and Lillian (Don) Nunnelly. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, and son, John Mark Hughes.

In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the St Jude Children’s Hospital.  The family wishes to thank everyone at Elmcroft Senior Living, Presbyterian Hospital and Hospice – especially Dr Yuki Sakai - for their concern and excellent care.

Services will be held Thursday May 3, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. at FRENCH – Wyoming, with Pastor Benjamin Larzelere III Officiating.
