July 20, 1924 — October 13, 2022

Winter, Alvin Junior, M.Sgt. USAF Ret

Alvin Junior Winter of Albuquerque, passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 13, 2022, at the age of 98.

Al was born on Sunday, July 20, 1924, in Tampa, Kansas, to George and Anna (Steinle) Winter. After growing up on the family farm, Al enlisted in the United States Army and served from 1943-1945 when he then transferred to the United States Air Force. That was the same year, Al married his love, Jewel Juanita (Nita) Faulkner in Wichita, where she worked as a "Rosie the Riveter" during WWII.

Al, known by many friends and acquaintances as "Sarge" and "Uncle Al", never met a stranger, easily making conversation with anyone willing to join him for a cup of coffee, especially if it was accompanied by baked goods. He had a lifetime fascination with any motorized vehicle and was a true car fanatic.

Al was a member of several community groups, including the Bellevue Christian Center, local chapters of the VFW and DAV, and was president of the Bellevue Senior Center. He was a lifelong Christian and a member of Faith in Christ Lutheran Church in Albuquerque.

Al was proceeded in death by his wife of 63 years, Nita Winter; his parents, George and Anna Winter; sister, Selma Ehrlich; brother, Victor Winter; and granddaughter, Mara Barry Winter. He is survived by his children, Vickie Love, Sherry (Bill) Rohrig, Joe (Rae Ann Barry) Winter and grandchildren, Jennifer (Ryan) Frier, Scott (Katy) Rohrig, Andrea Love and Brent (Jennifer) Rohrig.

He is also survived by seven great-grandchildren, Colin and Katelyn Frier, Emerson and Hayden Rohrig, Ella and Caden James, and Milo Rohrig.

He is lovingly remembered by several nieces in Arkansas and Kansas. There will be a family Celebration of Life in Omaha, Nebraska on Saturday, November 26, 2022, with an internment to follow at Bellevue Cemetery.

The family asks that memorial contributions be made to Presbyterian Healthcare Foundation/Hospice to enable other families to experience the incredible support, care and dignity Al received in his final days.
